The Thinking Man's Bible: The New Age of Reason

Chapter 24
1st & 2nd Comings of the Messiah

First Coming

Second Coming

If Jesus were the Messiah, his first coming would have completely fulfilled the Law and the Prophets; so why the need for his returning for a second try? The Old Testament does not mention a second coming of the Messiah; so why is it such a major part of Christian doctrine? Because, as we see below, Jesus’ first coming did not fulfill the Old Testament prophecies. The early Christians evidently invented an excuse for this sticky shortcoming by implying that anything Jesus hadn’t done in his first coming would be done later in a second coming. This ploy is not supported by the Bible.

The First Coming

Let’s look at the prophecies which the first coming failed to satisfy.

24.1 The coming of the Messiah would bring an end to sinfulness. This did not happen.

"…ye shall be clean; from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you…and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh…and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them…I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquities." Ezek 36:25-27,33

"Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwelling places, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them…they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them." Ezek 37:23,24

"The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth…thou shalt not see evil any more." Zeph 3:13,15

"There the wicked cease from troubling…" Job 3:17

"Thy people also shall be all righteous…" Isa 60:21

"…the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found…" Jer 50:20

24.2 The coming of the Messiah would bring an end to weeping. This did not happen.

"…and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying." Isa 65:19

24.3 The coming of the Messiah would bring peace and an end to predation and war. It did not happen.

"…and his name shall be called…The Prince of Peace." Isa 9:6

"The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together…And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the o24. And the suckling child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain;" Isa 11:6-9

"The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent’s meat. They shall no hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain…" Isa 65:25

"And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off; and he shall speak peace unto the heathen…" Zech 9:10

"…I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth…" Hos 2:18

24.4 The Messiah’s coming would usher in one creed and one religion. This did not happen.

"And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising…all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side…[Midianites, Ephahsians, and Shebans] shall come…and they shall shew forth the praises of the Lord." Isa 60:3-6

"…The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of the Lord, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel…Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings…" Isa 60:14,16

"…shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord." Isa 66:23

24.5 The Messiah’s coming would usher in one kingdom and one king. This did not happen.

"…and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth." Isa 11:12

"…I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west; I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;" Isa 43:5-6

"…that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought." Isa 60:11,12

24.7 The Messiah’s coming would usher in the gathering of the ten tribes under their own king. This did not happen.

24.12 The Messiah’s coming would usher in a renewal of the Covenant as sanctification of the Israelites. This did not happen.

The Second Coming

What were the signs of the messiah’s second coming? When reading these signs, one should be careful to consider that these signs have been applicable to every generation and in every period of history. There have always been wars and rumors of war. Man’s history has always trended from the superstitious towards nature and reason. Man has always been confused about the future of the world.

24.18 Jesus said that no one but God knew when the second coming would be, but he also listed the specific signs to watch for.

"But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father." Mt 24:36 & Mk 13:32

"So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors…This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled." Mt 24:33,34

Some folks seem to think themselves more prescient than the Bible. "A few of these things are… A general decline in morality… A widespread decline in religious faith… A prevalence of a naturalistic evolutionary philosophy in science… A rebellious attitude of most of the younger generation… Conflict between the prosperous and the poor… Rapid rise of anti-Christian leaders and philosophers… Infiltration of false teachers and leaders into Christian churches… Successive world wars, and widespread fear and confusion regarding the world’s future." (Morris & Clark, 336)

24.19 A major difficulty is that Jesus and his disciples clearly stated that a second coming was imminent and that it would involve the people who he was talking to at the time, not to people thousands of years in the future.

"…The kingdom of heaven is at hand." Mt 10:7

"…There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom." Mt 16:28

"…This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled." Mt 24:34

"…there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power." Mk 9:1

"…this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done." Mk 13:30

"…there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God." Lk 9:27

"…This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled." Lk 21:32

Paul: "…we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." 1Thes 4:15

Paul: "For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry." Heb 10:37

"Be ye also patient…for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh." Jas 5:8

"…repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly…" Rev 2:5

"Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly…" Rev 2:16

"…I come quickly…" Rev 3:11 & 22:7 & 22:12 & 22:20

"…the time is at hand." Rev 22:10
