We are not bigots. We believe that it does not matter what ones religion is, as long as one is willing to kill for it. |

1. God, himself, employed the sword as a weapon and as a threat to enforce His will. "...[God] placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life." Gen 3:24 "And the ass saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand..." Num 22:23,31 "And the Lord said... him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay." 1Kgs 19:14-17 "...I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land." 2Kgs 19:7 & Isa 37:7 "And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem..." 1Cr 21:16 "And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof. 1Cr 21:30 "But David could not go before it to inquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD." 1Cr 21:27 "He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him." Job 40:19 "Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword:" Ps 17:13 "He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance... Their priests fell by the sword..." Ps 78:62,64 "But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it." Isa 1:20 "Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword." Isa 13:15 "In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea." Isa 27:1 "For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment." Isa 34:5 "The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for the LORD hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea." Isa 34:6 "Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter..." Isa 65:12 "For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many." Isa 66:16 "...I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them." Jer. 9:16 "Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daughters shall die by famine:" Jer. 11:22 "...the sword of the LORD shall devour from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land: no flesh shall have peace." Jer. 12:12 "...I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence." Jer. 14:12 "Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place... Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed. And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword..." Jer. 14:13,15,16 "...Thus saith the LORD; Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity." Jer. 15:2 "...the residue of them will I deliver to the sword before their enemies, saith the LORD." Jer. 15:9 "...I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies..." Jer. 19:7 "For thus saith the LORD... they shall fall by the sword of their enemies... and shall slay them with the sword." Jer. 20:4 "...he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy." Jer. 21:7 "And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them." Jer. 25:16 "...Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you." Jer. 25:27 "...I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts." Jer. 25:29 "...he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD." Jer. 25:31 "And when he cometh, he shall smite the land of Egypt, and deliver such as are for death to death; and such as are for captivity to captivity; and such as are for the sword to the sword." Jer. 43:11 "For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates." Jer. 46:10 "O thou sword of the LORD, how long will it be ere thou be quiet? put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still." Jer. 47:6 "Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood." Jer. 48:10 "...I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:" Jer. 49:37 "...Thus saith the Lord GOD to the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys; Behold, I, even I, will bring a sword upon you, and I will destroy your high places." Ezek 6:3 "Ye have feared the sword; and I will bring a sword upon you, saith the Lord GOD... Ye shall fall by the sword; I will judge you in the border of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the LORD." Ezek 11:8,10 "Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, sword, go through the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it:" Ezek 14:17 "And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword..." Ezek 17:21 "...Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I am against thee, and will draw forth my sword out of his sheath, and will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked.... therefore shall my sword go forth out of his sheath against all flesh from the south to the north: That all flesh may know that I the LORD have drawn forth my sword out of his sheath: it shall not return any more." Ezek 21:3-5 "...Thus saith the LORD; Say, A sword, a sword is sharpened, and also furbished:... And he hath given it to be furbished, that it may be handled: this sword is sharpened, and it is furbished, to give it into the hand of the slayer. Cry and howl, son of man: for it shall be upon my people, it shall be upon all the princes of Israel: terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people: smite therefore upon thy thigh. Because it is a trial, and what if the sword contemn even the rod? it shall be no more, saith the Lord GOD. Thou therefore, son of man, prophesy, and smite thine hands together, and let the sword be doubled the third time, the sword of the slain: it is the sword of the great men that are slain, which entereth into their privy chambers. I have set the point of the sword against all their gates, that their heart may faint, and their ruins be multiplied: ah! it is made bright, it is wrapped up for the slaughter." Ezek 21:9,11-15 "...Thus saith the Lord GOD... The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is furbished..." Ezek 21:28 "...Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the excellency of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pitieth; and your sons and your daughters whom ye have left shall fall by the sword." Ezek 24:21 "Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also stretch out mine hand upon Edom... and they of Dedan shall fall by the sword." Ezek 25:13 "And her daughters which are in the field shall be slain by the sword; and they shall know that I am the LORD." Ezek 26:6 "He shall slay with the sword thy daughters in the field..." Ezek 26:8 "...he shall slay thy people by the sword..." Ezek 26:11 "For I will send into her pestilence, and blood into her streets; and the wounded shall be judged in the midst of her by the sword upon her on every side; and they shall know that I am the LORD." Ezek 28:23 "Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will bring a sword upon thee, and cut off man and beast out of thee." Ezek 29:8 "And I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and put my sword in his hand... and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall put my sword into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall stretch it out upon the land of Egypt." Ezek 30:24,25 "Yea, I will make many people amazed at thee, and their kings shall be horribly afraid for thee, when I shall brandish my sword before them; and they shall tremble at every moment, every man for his own life, in the day of thy fall. For thus saith the Lord GOD; The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon thee. By the swords of the mighty will I cause thy multitude to fall, the terrible of the nations, all of them..." Ezek 32:10-12 "Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman: If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people; Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand." Ezek 33:2-6 "And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD: every man's sword shall be against his brother." Ezek 38:21 "And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword." Ezek 39:23 "Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword..." Amos 7:17 "And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God." Rev 19:15 2. Of course, a sword may not be the only choice or the most effective method of fulfilling Gods will. The sword might be employed jointly with other means of mayhem. Some pious folks hold that God approves of chemical, biological, scorched-earth, and weather-modification weapons as means of mass destruction because of the following passages as well Gods use of pestilence, disease, famine, and hemerroids (used elsewhere in the Bible). "The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish." Deut 28:22 "Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel..." 1Cr 21:12 "And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword." Josh 10:11 "And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow." Josh 24:12 "And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to." Judg 20:48 "And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands." 1Sam 17:47 "From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty." 2Sam 1:22 "Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?" 2Sam 2:26 "And I will appoint over them four kinds, saith the LORD: the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy." Jer. 15:3 "And afterward, saith the LORD, I will deliver [them] from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine..." Jer. 21:7 "He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence..." Jer. 21:9 "And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, among them, till they be consumed..." Jer. 24:10 "... that nation will I punish, saith the LORD, with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand." Jer. 27:8 "Why will ye die, thou and thy people, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, as the LORD hath spoken..." Jer. 27:13 "Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence..." Jer. 29:17 "And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence..." Jer. 29:18 "...the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence..." Jer. 32:24 "...It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence;" Jer. 32:36 "...I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine..." Jer. 34:17 "Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence..." Jer. 38:2 "Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt..." Jer. 42:16 "...they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them." Jer. 42:17 "Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence...." Jer. 42:22 "... they shall even be consumed by the sword and by the famine: they shall die, from the least even unto the greatest, by the sword and by the famine: and they shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach." Jer. 44:12 "For I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence:" Jer. 44:13 "...[we] have been consumed by the sword and by the famine." Jer. 44:18 "...all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them." Jer. 44:27 "A third part of thee shall die with the pestilence, and with famine shall they be consumed in the midst of thee: and a third part shall fall by the sword round about thee..." Ezek 5:12 "So will I send upon you famine and evil beasts, and they shall bereave thee; and pestilence and blood shall pass through thee; and I will bring the sword upon thee. I the LORD have spoken it." Ezek 5:17 "Thus saith the Lord GOD... for they shall fall by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence. He that is far off shall die of the pestilence; and he that is near shall fall by the sword; and he that remaineth and is besieged shall die by the famine..." Ezek 6:11,12 "The sword is without, and the pestilence and the famine within: he that is in the field shall die with the sword; and he that is in the city, famine and pestilence shall devour him." Ezek 7:15 "But I will leave a few men of them from the sword, from the famine, and from the pestilence... and they shall know that I am the LORD." Ezek 12:16 "For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?" Ezek 14:21 "...Thus saith the Lord GOD; As I live, surely they that are in the wastes shall fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and they that be in the forts and in the caves shall die of the pestilence." Ezek 33:27 "I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses; and I have made the stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD." Amos 4:10 "And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth." Rev 6:8 3. God allows that bad behavior by one man, even though he tried to make amends, may be punished by mutilating and murdering all the men of his home town, enslaving their women and children, and looting the city at sword-point. "And it came to pass on the third day, when they [of the city] were sore [from being deceitfully circumcised], that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren [as revenge for her seduction or rape by Prince Shechem], took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males. And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out. The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister. They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field, And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house." Gen 34:25-29 4. On the other hand, God promises that those who harm widows and orphans will be executed by sword. "Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless." Ex 22:22-24 5. God says that we may bequeath and inherit loot pillaged by force of arms, if it was gained in the furtherance of His will. "Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow." Gen 48:22 6. By Gods word and example we may employ a sword to slaughter family, friends, and neighbors either to enforce the observance of religious ceremonies or to punish purely religious transgressions. And, likewise, we may be punished by others for our trespasses. "...let us... sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword." Ex 5:3 "...Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour. And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men." Ex 32:27,28 "Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day." Ezra 9:7 "For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil." Rom 13:4 7. Since God applies His vengeance with a sword, so should we. If a problem cannot be solved by slaying transgressors, then God will apply other means disease and slavery, for example. "And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste." Lev 26:25,33 8. God tells us that not only does peace exist when we are not attacked, but peace still exists while we attack and slaughter our enemies. "And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword." Lev 26:6-8 9. The mere threat of the use of deadly force may be used to deter an invader. It may not be effective, however. "And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?" Num 14:3 10. Leaders may use the threat of slaughter and defeat to discipline followers; and, too this day, all great tyrants have known how to invoke a threat from a foreign devil to impel obedience at home. "For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you." Num 14:43 11. We may defend our borders and ourselves from gangs by threatening the use of deadly force. On the other hand, gangs may use deadly force to invade, plunder, and murder (even without the use of lawyers). "And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword." Num 20:18 "And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel. And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong." Num 21:23,24 12. If one were going to abuse an animal (out of personal embarrassment, for example) one should always leave open the option to kill the uppity animal outright. "And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee." Num 22:29 13. The sword is Gods preferred method of dealing with leaders and communities who resist aggression and conquest in His name. "And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword." Ex 17:13 "And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword." Num 31:8 "Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword." Deut 13:15 "And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:" Deut 20:13 "The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs." Deut 32:25 "If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me. I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy." Deut 32:41,42 "And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword." Josh 6:21 "And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword." Josh 8:24 "And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho." Josh 10:28 "And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho." Josh 10:30 "And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah." Josh 10:32 "And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish." Josh 10:35 "And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein." Josh 10:37 "And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king." Josh 10:39 "And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms. And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire. And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded." Josh 11:10-12 "And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe." Josh 11:14 "Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that were slain by them." Josh 13:22 "And the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father." Josh 19:47 "Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire." Judg 1:8 "And when he showed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family." Judg 1:25 "And the LORD discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his chariot, and fled away on his feet. But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword; and there was not a man left." Judg 4:15,16 "...and the LORD set every man's sword against his fellow..." Judg 7:22 "And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire." Judg 18:27 "And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword." Judg 20:37 "And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children." Judg 21:10 "And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture." 1Sam 14:20 "And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword." 1Sam 15:8 "And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword." 1Sam 22:19 "And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword." 2Sam 1:12 "And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkathhazzurim, which is in Gibeon." 2Sam 2:16 "Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him." 2Sam 11:25 "And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword." 2Sam 15:14 "For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured." 2Sam 18:8 "He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword: and the LORD wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to spoil." 2Sam 23:10 "Thou shalt burn with fire a third part in the midst of the city... and thou shalt take a third part, and smite about it with a knife: and a third part thou shalt scatter in the wind..." Ezek 5:2 "...and I will scatter a third part into all the winds, and I will draw out a sword after them." Ezek 5:12 14. The sword is also a symbol of Gods favor and protection. "Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places." Deut 33:29 "And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?" Josh 5:13 "And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host." Judg 7:14 "When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon." Judg 7:18 "And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon." Judg 7:2 15. Evidently, Gods favorite method of suicide, assisted or otherwise, is to die by the sword. "Then [Abimelech] called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died." Judg 9 "Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it. And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him." 1Sam 31:4,5 "Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father's house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread." 2Sam 3:29 "Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it. And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died." 1Cr 10:4,5 "Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken." Ps 37:15 "And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled." Acts 16:27 16. As today, tyrants have historically engaged in attempts at sword-control. In this case, the Philistines failed. "Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears: But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his ax, and his mattock. Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads. So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found." 1Sam 13:19-22 17. Revenge is an approved motive for murdering with a sword. "And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal." 1Sam 15:33 18. The sword is also an appropriate method of dealing with domestic disputes and sinful behavior. "Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife." 2Sam 12:9,10 "These discovered her nakedness: they took her sons and her daughters, and slew her with the sword..." Ezek 23:10 "And I will set my jealousy against thee, and they shall deal furiously with thee: they shall take away thy nose and thine ears; and thy remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy residue shall be devoured by the fire." Ezek 23:25 "And the company shall stone them with stones, and dispatch them with their swords; they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses with fire. Thus will I cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to do after your lewdness." Ezek 23:47,48 "I saw the Lord standing upon the altar: and he said... I will slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered... I command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good... All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword..." Amos 9:1,4,10 19. Projectiles may overcome the advantage that the larger man has in a sword fight, one-on-one; but it takes a hero of mythical proportions to slay a man twice in one battle as David did. Either that, or Davids sling & stone did not kill Goliath, so David really needed a sword to kill Goliath. In any case, it is clearly permissible to mutilate the vanquished by means of a sword. "So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled." 1Sam 17:50,51 20. A good method for killing a man is to give him a sword in the ribs while grabbing his beard to kiss him. "When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa went before them. And Joab's garment that he had put on was girded unto him, and upon it a girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the sheath thereof; and as he went forth it fell out. And Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him. But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab's hand: so he smote him therewith in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died." 2Sam 20:8-10 21. Neither Solomon nor the Israelites, nor God for that matter, seemed to think it unusual for a King to have the power to cruelly murder an infant during a civil lawsuit. Indeed, this was and still is considered the height of wisdom. We are, therefore, compelled to support the notion that a tyrant with a sword need not obey modern standards of restraint, justice, or morality. "And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof. And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment." 1Kgs 3:24-28 22. The threat of execution by sword is an appropriate way for a tyrant to maintain fear and subservience among his vassals. "And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me to day that he will not slay his servant with the sword. And Solomon said, If he will show himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die." 1Kgs 1:51,52 "And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I sware to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword." 1Kgs 2:8 "And they fetched forth Urijah out of Egypt, and brought him unto Jehoiakim the king; who slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people." Jer. 26:23 23. Gods spokesmen are free to slaughter their competition with a sword. "And Elijah said unto them, Take the [450] prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword And [Elijah] said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away." 1Kgs 18:40; 19:1,10,14 24. Executions by sword may not take place inside religious buildings, unless its a heathen religious building, of course. "But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD... And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal... and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars..." 2Kgs 11:15,18 "And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead." 2Kgs 19:37 "Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said, Slay her not in the house of the LORD." 2Cr 23:14 25. Atrocities must be pre-approved by bribing a deity. "And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal." 2Kgs 10:25 26. Although some POWs and captured civilians will be treated humanely, others will be accorded swift dispatch by sword and other means. "...Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master." 2Kgs 6:22 27. The sword may be a tool of evil and disobedience. "If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine..." 2Cr 20:9 "The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation." Ps 37:14 "Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:" Amos 1:11 28. The sword may be used for class warfare and ethnic revenge. "Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and did what they would unto those that hated them." Esth. 9:5 "But he saveth the poor from the sword..." Job 5:15 29. The sword may be used to punish failure. "...So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword." 2Cr 32:21 |
